November Marks 1,200 Days of Retention and Growing!

November marks a new milestone for leading Usenet providers.  As services like Newshosting, UseNetServer, Astraweb and more pass 1,200 days of binary retention.  Some users have come to expect the continued growth in Usenet retention as many large providers spool daily.  Yet the achievement is no less impressive.  As Usenet fans or perhaps fanatics we tip our glass to those continuously improving the experience.  Both in terms of retention growth and overall value (cost, reliability, performance and new, innovative features).

It’s hard to believe we have access to over three years of binary retention.  At 1,200 days you can access newsgroup posts from 3 years and 3 months ago.  As 1,200 days ago was August of 2008.  In comparison Giganews was the clear leader in retention at that time.  Completing their upgrade to 240 days (eight months) of binary retention in September of 2008.  Times have certainly changed since then as a number of leading Usenet providers are within 10 days of each other now.  All with nearly 40 months of binary retention and growing.

The value offered by Usenet providers has also changed quite a bit since 2008.  With services offering unlimited Usenet for $10 or less a month rather than $20-$30 a month.  Not only has the cost dropped significantly.  The services themselves are much improved.  Including SSL encryption, better reliability / performance and extra features like newsreaders, Usenet search, online storage and VPN access.  All for under $10 a month.

We’ll see you right here in 100 days as we all help celebrate 1,300 days of binary retention.  Then in 9 months we’ll happily help celebrate 4 years of retention.  Until then continue to enjoy all the advantages of Usenet.  Visit Newsgroup Reviews to learn more about Usenet retention.  Follow us @NewsgroupRevs for the latest offers.

NewsDemon 200 Gigabyte for $9.00 Usenet Special

NewsDemon has run some excellent specials over the years.  From the popular Demon Deal which includes unlimited Usenet access and 30 GB of online storage for $9.99 a month to our NGR special which consists of 150 GB of Usenet access for $8.95 a month.  Now NewsDemon is rolling out a 200 GB monthly account.  Offering members up to 200 GB of monthly newsgroup downloads for $9 a month.

Let’s compare the new 200 GB promotion to the NGR Special and Demon Deal:

Demon Deal – Unlimited Usenet + Online Storage for $9.99 a month

The Demon Deal is our favorite NewsDemon special for those interested in unlimited Usenet.  Along with high retention, SSL encryption, 50 connections and a free newsreader, NewsDemon gives Demon Deal members 30 GB of free online storage.  All for just $9.99 a month.

200 GB Special – 200 GB of Usenet downloads for $9 a month

How much do you download each month?  A majority of newsgroup users would answer with a number less than 200 GB.  Most would be far less.  That’s why NewsDemon is offering the new 200 GB special.  Enjoy up to 200 GB of monthly Usenet access for just $9 a month.

NGR Special – 150 GB of Usenet downloads for $8.95 a month

The NGR Special was the best deal going on metered Usenet access.  With up to 150 GB of newsgroup downloads for $8.95 a month.  While that’s still a great value the new 200 GB special gives you an extra 50 GB a month for a nickel.

Which NewsDemon deal is best?  It depends on your monthly usage and whether or not you want the online storage.  We like the Demon Deal the most and would pay the extra $1 a month for unlimited downloads and online storage.  While those who are just looking for Usenet and download less than 200 GB a month can save $1 each month with the 200 GB deal for $9 a month.

Some of the specials listed above are only accessible through NGRBlog.com and NewsgroupReviews.com.  Meaning if you go to Newsdemon.com directly or through another site the pricing will be different for some accounts.  To share the deals with friends send them to this post or the NewsDemon specials page of NGR.

Seeking Alternatives to Just4Today.net?

We’ve had several NGR visitors ask if we can recommend any alternatives to Just4Today.net for free or inexpensive Usenet access.  As the Just4Today site has been down for maintenance for several days now.  Making the service inaccessible.  As those who frequent Just4Today know you need a new password to access the news server each day.  So until the site comes back up there is no more freeJust4Today Usenet access.

First off we have no idea how long Just4Today is going to be down.  We have the same information everyone else has from visiting the site.  The message simply shows ‘Currently down for maintenance…‘ without an ETA.

Here are some alternatives to get you through the Just4Today outage:

Free Usenet Trials from Premium Providers

Several leading Usenet providers offer free Usenet trials to give you a chance to try the service before purchasing a membership.  We’re not suggesting you leech their offers but rather you might enjoy the service and want to sign up at the end of the trial period.  As most of them offer very high retention and other advantages over Just4Today.  Many offer two week free trials.

Unlimited Usenet Access for Under $10 a Month

A number of our favorite Usenet providers offer NGR readers deep discounts on their services.  Including unlimited newsgroup downloads along with extras like free newsreader, Usenet search, storage and personal VPN for under $10 a month.  In addition to very high binary retention (over 3 years) and excellent performance.  Again there is a cost but these are all quite a value.

Frugal Usenet Offers 100 Days of Retention for $5.99 a Month

Frugal Usenet offers 100 days of binary retention along with SSL encryption and 20 connections for $5.99 a month.  The retention isn’t near as high as some other providers but it is much higher than Just4Today.  The Frugal Usenet service is available for $5.99 a month or $60 a year.

We hope the just4Today site and Usenet service are back up soon.  In the meantime check out these alternatives.  If you’re aware of any other free or low cost options please let us know.

Wide Open West – WOW – Drops Free Usenet

Wide Open West, also known as WOW, is discontinuing their Usenet service on November 1, 2011.  As with most other ISP’s that offer access to newsgroups, the WOW team had partnered with a leading provider to give customers limited access to Usenet.  Members would connect to news.wowway.com and download up to 5 GB a month.  Starting tomorrow, November 1, 2011 the Usenet service will be discontinued.  Those seeking alternatives will find some excellent options including unlimited Usenet for under $10 a month.

WOW certainly isn’t the first ISP to drop free Usenet.  Like many others in the past, WOW customers will be looking for solid alternatives.  There are several Usenet providers who offer fast, reliable service at a good price.  Along with free value-added features like newsreaders, Usenet search and online storage.  Here are a few of our favorites along with special discount offers available to WOW customers seeking Usenet access:

All the services we’re about to list are leaders in the industry.  Meaning they all offer high retention (well over 3 years), SSL encryption, good performance and reliable newsgroup downloads.

Newshosting – Unlimited Usenet + Client for $9.99/mo. or $99/yr.

We list Newshosting first because they offer a really cool Usenet client free of charge.  With the Newshosting client you can search for newsgroup content, preview and download.  The newsreader will even take care of repairs and extracting files.  Best of all you can enjoy unlimited Usenet access with all the bells and whistles for just $9.99 a month or $99 a year.

UseNetServer – Unlimited Usenet + Search for $10/mo. or $95/yr.

UseNetServer is another excellent choice for Usenet access.  They offer members unlimited newsgroup access with UNS global search (a Usenet search engine) along with high retention and free SSL encryption.  Enjoy unlimited Usenet downloads for just $10 a month.  The UseNetServer (UNS) $10 a month and $95 yearly Usenet specials are both excellent values.

NewsDemon – Unlimited Usenet + Client + Storage for $9.99

NewsDemon is another leading Usenet service that we’re quite fond of.  They offer a wide assortment of value-added features along with unlimited Usenet.  Starting with a free licensed copy of News Rover newsreader.  In addition members enjoy 30 GB of free online storage from StorageNinja.  Along with high retention and free SSL for just $9.99 a month.

Usenet.net Gets a Fresh New Site Design

We recently visited Usenet.net and noticed the site has a fresh new look.  The design team did a good job with the layout and presentation of the site.  The service features, pricing, free trial and promotion are all easy to spot at first glance.  We didn’t notice any glaring differences in the features or price of the service.  Yet it’s certainly possible that more changes could come since the effort was spent to redesign the site.

For those unfamiliar with Usenet.net they’ve been around since 2004.   Usenet.net provides unlimited Usenet access with high binary retention, optional 256-bit SSL encryption and up to 30 connections.

Usenet.net newsgroup service features include:

  • 1,168 days of binary retention
  • 3,048 days of text retention
  • Unlimited Usenet – $14.99 to $19.99 a month
  • Uncapped speeds
  • 30 connections
  • 256-bit SSL (based on plan chosen)
  • Free trial – 5 days and up to 10 GB
  • 50% off the first month of service

NewsgroupDirect Blocktober Special

NewsgroupDirect is running another great special this month.  You might recall they ran their popular Terabyte Tuesday offer a couple weeks ago on October 11th.  Now they are offering an even better deal.  New and existing members can pick up a 1 TB block plus a 10% bonus (so 1.1 TB + 10% bonus for headers) for just $50.  Visit NewsgroupDirect.com before 12 AM EST Oct. 26th to take advantage of their Blocktober special.

The blocktober deal is a very good value.  With 1.1 Terabyte blocks for just $50.  That works out to less than 5 cents a gig.  Which is more than 50% off their normal pricing.  Also remember that NewsgroupDirect block accounts are non-expiring so you can take as long as you’d like to use up the downloads.  We also highly recommend block accounts for fills and as a backup.  In addition to a cheap unlimited Usenet account.

Remember to sign up for the NewsgroupDirect Blocktober promotion before midnight.  As the special is only running today – October 25, 2011.  As of midnight EST the deal will end and the price will go back to $100 for a 1 TB block.  Also if you sign up for NGD’s mailing list you could win a $500 Amazon gift card.

Newshosting Client : SafeSearch and Download Folders

Earlier this week Newshosting released version 1.1.0 of their popular Usenet client.  Since then we’ve had a few readers ask how the new features are configured.  Rather than answer via email we thought it better to share the tutorial in a post.  That way others can benefit as well.  We’ll be covering the steps to configure SafeSearch.  Along with instructions for customizing download folders.

Enjoy unlimited Usenet and free Newshosting client access for $9.99 a month or $99 a year.

Configuring SafeSearch in the Newshosting Usenet Client

SafeSearch is a new feature in the Newshoting client that helps to filter out adult content.  To enable the SafeSearch option from within the newsreader simply click on Options and then Settings.  Then click on the SafeSearch tab.  To enable SafeSearch simply check the box.  The result is shown below.

Take notice of the statement at the top of the screen shot.  Because “Only items of newsgroups that are explicitly marked as having adult content in them are filtered when SafeSearch is enabled.  So there might still be some items in listings and search results that are considered adult content“.

Enjoy unlimited Usenet and free Newshosting client access for $9.99 a month or $99 a year.

Newshosting Client – Configuring Download Folder Options

You have a few options when configuring how the Newshosting client handles download folders.  With some nice ways to organize downloads.  To access the download folder settings once again click on Options and then Settings.  Then click on the Downloads tab.  The following screen will be displayed.

Take notice of the highlighted section for download folder options.  Starting with the path which is configurable.  Once you decide where you want downloads stored look over the additional options:

  • Create subfolders for each date
  • Create subfolders for each newsgroup
  • Create date folders before newsgroup folders

Check the boxes based on your download folder preferences.  You’ll also notice options below for controlling how the Newshosting client handles PAR2 repairs and auto-unRAR functions.

That’s all there is to it.  You can easily enable the SafeSearch feature (disabled by default) and configure download folder options within a couple minutes.  New members will be happy to know that the Newshosting client comes pre-configured.  With addition tweaks like those above that further enhance your experience.

Enjoy unlimited Usenet and free Newshosting client access for $9.99 a month or $99 a year.
