Newshosting’s Rapid Binary Retention Growth

We often get copies of press releases when providers hit new milestones.  This week was no exception.  As we mentioned in a post earlier this week several leading Usenet providers just passed 1,300 days of binary retention and continue to spool daily.  So it wasn’t surprising to see a related announcement from Newshosting.  However, part of the release caught our eye.  Specifically the rapid growth of Newshosting in recent years.  Mentioning that in recent years Newshosting has grown by over 1,000 days of binary retention.  While also adding a newsreader and launching their popular $9.99 unlimited Usenet deal.

While Newshosting isn’t the only Usenet provider to see massive growth in retention they didn’t just stop there.  Newshosting’s growth in terms of popularity has been driven by a number of factors.  Not the least of which is the increased retention but just as important is their $9.99/mo. and $99/yr. specials along with the addition of their impressive Newshosting client.  As Usenet fans we always knew about Newshosting.  They’ve been a top provider for years but recently they’ve taken a huge leap forward to become arguably the best value in Usenet.

What’s next for Newshosting?  Only time will tell but we’re betting they’ll continue to add value to an already excellent service.  As we see now with retention at 1,302 days and counting.  Regardless of which criteria you use to compare Usenet providers (retention, performance, reliability, features, price) Newshosting comes up close to if not at the top of every list.  We look forward to tracking and updating you on their continued growth.

Usenet Providers Pass 1,300 Days of Binary Retention

This week a number of leading Usenet providers hit a new milestone.  As services like UseNetServer, Newshosting, NewsDemon and Astraweb cross 1,300 days of binary retention.  We join in celebrating all the Usenet services who continue to grow retention and innovate in other ways.  It’s hard to believe that just a few years ago we were discussing retention in terms of days.  Now we’re getting closer and closer to four years of binary retention!  Better yet you can enjoy unlimited Usenet access with free extras for just $10 a month.

You now have access to over three and a half years of binary newsgroup posts.  At 1,300 days you can access newsgroup posts from 3 years and 7 months ago.  As 1,300 days ago was August of 2008.  Back then the highest retention to be found was 240 days, which works out to around 8 months.  Now we can all explore over 42 months of Usenet posts for a fraction of the 2008 price of newsgroup access.

The quality and value offered by Usenet services has also progressed since 2008.  Back then providers offered unlimited Usenet for $20-$30 a month.  Fast forward to 2012 and the price is half that much.  Not only has the cost dropped significantly.  The services have brought many innovations.  Including faster speeds and additional features like newsreaders, Usenet search and online storage.  All for under $10 a month.

We look forward to celebrating again in 100 days as Usenet hits 1,400 days of binary retention.  It won’t be too much longer before they surpass 4 years of retention.  Until then continue enjoying the best Usenet has to offer.  Visit Newsgroup Reviews to learn more about Usenet. Usenet Quick Start Guide

The primary goal of NGR is to provide comprehensive Usenet coverage.  Including all of the active Usenet providers, newsreader clients and search sites.  Yet we understand that some of you don’t want to take the time to read several reviews and consider all the options.  You’d rather be up and running on Usenet asap.  If you fall into that category then this Usenet quick start guide is written for you.  We’ll focus on Newshosting since they offer an excellent Usenet client and unlimited Usenet to our readers for just $9.99 a month or $99 a year.

First we’d like to give you some background on the Newshosting service and their popular newsreader client.  Newshosting is a leading Usenet provider and offers everything you would expect and then some.  From high retention and completion to 256-bit SSL, news servers in the U.S and Europe, free newsreader with built-in Usenet search, uncapped speeds and unlimited Usenet access.  Their Usenet client supports Windows, Mac and Linux.  The software takes care of everything.  Search for content, preview, download, repair and extract.

Step 1 – Sign Up for Newshosting’s Unlimited Usenet Plan

Joining Newshosting is simple.  New members save up to 44% off their unlimited plan.  With unlimited Usenet downloads for just $9.99/mo. or $99 a year.  The discount in recurring so enjoy the savings for the life of your account.  To learn more and to sign up visit their Newshosting NGR special page.  The registration process is simple.  Just enter your name, email address, desired username, password and payment information.  Newshosting offers PayPal and credit card payment options.  Shortly after signing up you’ll receive an email with everything you need including a link to the Newshosting client download.

Step 2 – Download and Install the Newshosting Usenet Client

By now you’ve received your welcome email from Newshosting.  In it you’ll find everything you need to get started.  Including a link to download their Usenet client.  For future reference you can also log into the Newshosting.com site anytime and access the client download page from within the control panel.

Once you’re on the Newshosting client page simply click on the radio button for the version you’d like to download – Windows, Mac or Linux.  If you have more than one machine Newshosting will let you use the client free on multiple computers and operating systems.  As long as you only connect from one system at any given time.  So those with Windows and Mac systems for example can try out the client on both.

There isn’t really anything to go over in terms of the install.  You’ll download the software based on operating system and then run the file to install the Newshosting client.  The only thing you’ll need handy is your username and password.  Which you can have the client save for future launches if you’d like.

Step 3 – Configuring the Newshosting Usenet Client

If you’re in a big hurry to download something have at it.  The Newshosting client is pre-configured and ready to go.  In addition to the default settings here are a few additional tweaks that we enjoy and find helpful.  To access the Newshosting client settings open the software and click on Options and then Settings.  From there you’ll see several options with associated images to the left of the screen.

Tip #1 : Enable SSL – if you would like to enable 256-bit SSL for all your Newshosting connections just click on the Connection icon and check the “Prefer SSL connections if available” box.  For the SSL port we recommend port 443 since in some cases it will help protect against ISP throttling.  If you want to protect your online privacy beyond just Usenet connections then we suggest you consider a VPN service.

Tip #2 : Search Providers – Newshosting includes a built-in Usenet search engine.  You can search across their entire span of retention and newsgroups for content.  Along with the native Newshosting search they also include Binsearch.info as a search option.  Choosing between the two is very simple.  When doing a search you’ll see a magnifying glass icon to the left.  Click on it and you can choose between Newshosting and Binsearch.info.  Both work well and you can switch between them anytime.

Tip #3 : Download Folder – you can easily change the folder structure where Newshosting will save downloads.  To do so click on the Downloads icon.  Here you can set the main download folder along with preferences for subfolders.  Helping you sort content by newsgroup and/or date.

Tip #4 : PAR2 Repairs and UnRAR – the Newshosting client can take care of repairing partial or damaged files.  Along with extracting the resulting contents.  You can control how Newshosting handles both the PAR2 repairs and UnRAR actions from the Downloads tab in the settings area.

Tip #5 : SafeSearch Feature – Newshosting doesn’t filter search results by default.  Meaning you might run across some adult content when searching newsgroups.  If you would like to reduce the amount of adult content in search results then enable the SafeSearch feature.  Those who want their Usenet experience to remain uncensored can simply skip this step.

How’s that for a quick start for Usenet.  Within a few minutes you’ll be downloading from newsgroups like a pro.  If a friend mentioned needing additional software, newsreader, WinRar, QuickPar, etc. you can skip all of that.  Along with finding a good NZB search site.  The Newshosting client takes care of everything.  You can go back to step 1 to get started or visit our Newshosting NGR special page and then come back for the quick setup tips.

Newshosting Client – Pausing Individual Downloads

Today we’d like to talk about a new feature in version 1.2.1 of Newshosting’s Usenet client.  Namely the ability to pause individual downloads.  As we’ve recently covered other enhancements like download scheduler and NZB auto-import.  Pausing individual downloads gives you more control over you’re queue.  As you can pause a download to allow others to finish.  Especially useful if you’re waiting for a particular download to complete.

The Newshosting newsreader is free to all members.  Download the latest version for Windows, Mac or Linux.  If you aren’t already using Newshosting we highly recommend their service.  New members can enjoy unlimited Usenet access with the client and Usenet search for only $9.99 a month or $99 a year.

Newshosting Client : Pausing Individual Downloads

To pause individual downloads inside the Newshosting client you’ll want to take a look at your queue.  To do so simply click on the Transfers icon at the top of the screen.  From there you can pause and resume individual downloads.  Giving you more flexibility in managing your downloads in the queue.

To pause a download right click on the description and click on Pause.

To resume a download right click on the description and click on Resume.

That’s all there is to it.  Now you can easily pause and resume individual downloads.  Enjoy downloading!

Newshosting Client : NZB Auto-Import

NZB auto-import is one of the new features in the latest version of Newshosting’s popular Usenet client.  Version 1.2.1 brought the newsreader out of beta and included NZB auto-import along with a new download scheduler and the ability to pause individual downloads.  Last Friday we talked about setting up the download scheduler.  Today we’d like to follow that up with a quick guide for configuring the NZB auto-import feature.

The Newshosting Usenet client is free to all subscribers.  You can download the latest version from their site.  If you aren’t already a Newshosting member we highly recommend you check out their special offer.  Enjoy unlimited newsgroup access with the newsreader and Usenet search for only $9.99 a month or $99 a year.

Newshosting Client : Configuring NZB Auto-Import

Setting up NZB auto-import in Newshosting’s client is a simple process.  Start by opening the client and focus on the menu options at the top of the screen.  Click on Options – Settings or press CTRL+, (ctrl comma).  After the settings box opens go down to the Inport icon on the left.  You’ll then see the following screen:

As you can see we’ve already configured the auto import folder in our screenshot above.  You’ll want to do the same.  First clicking on the Auto Import Folder checkbox.  Then choose the Folder to watch.  This is the folder the Newshosting client will ping for NZB files.  Anytime it finds an NZB file in the target folder it will automatically import it into the client.  Now you have two options.  You can let Newshosting delete the NZB file after import or move the NZB files to another folder after import.  Our preference was to move them to another folder.

That’s all there is to setting up Newshosting’s new NZB auto-import feature.  Enjoy downloading!

Newshosting released version 1.2.1 of their popular Usenet client a couple weeks ago.  Marking the first public ‘non-beta’ version of the newsreader.  They didn’t just remove the ‘beta’ tag though as version 1.2.1 included some nice new features including a download scheduler, nzb auto-import and the ability to pause individual downloads.  Today we’d like to walk you through setting up the new download scheduler.

Not a Newshosting member?  Enjoy unlimited Usenet with the free client for just $9.99 a month or $99 a year.

Newshosting Client : Configuring the Download Scheduler

Setting up the new download schedule in Newshosting’s client is a breeze.  Simply open the client and look to the menu options at the top of the screen.  Click on Options – Settings or press CTRL+, (ctrl comma).  After the settings box opens go down to the Scheduler icon on the left.  You’ll then see the following screen:

The first thing you want to do is enable the scheduler.  To do that simply click the Use Download Scheduler checkbox.  Then you can go through and select which hours you want the newsreader to download.  When your done making selections click Apply and then OK.  That’s all there is to setting up the download scheduler.  Stay tunes as next week we’ll take a look at the nzb auto-import feature and pausing individual downloads.

November Marks 1,200 Days of Retention and Growing!

November marks a new milestone for leading Usenet providers.  As services like Newshosting, UseNetServer, Astraweb and more pass 1,200 days of binary retention.  Some users have come to expect the continued growth in Usenet retention as many large providers spool daily.  Yet the achievement is no less impressive.  As Usenet fans or perhaps fanatics we tip our glass to those continuously improving the experience.  Both in terms of retention growth and overall value (cost, reliability, performance and new, innovative features).

It’s hard to believe we have access to over three years of binary retention.  At 1,200 days you can access newsgroup posts from 3 years and 3 months ago.  As 1,200 days ago was August of 2008.  In comparison Giganews was the clear leader in retention at that time.  Completing their upgrade to 240 days (eight months) of binary retention in September of 2008.  Times have certainly changed since then as a number of leading Usenet providers are within 10 days of each other now.  All with nearly 40 months of binary retention and growing.

The value offered by Usenet providers has also changed quite a bit since 2008.  With services offering unlimited Usenet for $10 or less a month rather than $20-$30 a month.  Not only has the cost dropped significantly.  The services themselves are much improved.  Including SSL encryption, better reliability / performance and extra features like newsreaders, Usenet search, online storage and VPN access.  All for under $10 a month.

We’ll see you right here in 100 days as we all help celebrate 1,300 days of binary retention.  Then in 9 months we’ll happily help celebrate 4 years of retention.  Until then continue to enjoy all the advantages of Usenet.  Visit Newsgroup Reviews to learn more about Usenet retention.  Follow us @NewsgroupRevs for the latest offers.

Newshosting Client : SafeSearch and Download Folders

Earlier this week Newshosting released version 1.1.0 of their popular Usenet client.  Since then we’ve had a few readers ask how the new features are configured.  Rather than answer via email we thought it better to share the tutorial in a post.  That way others can benefit as well.  We’ll be covering the steps to configure SafeSearch.  Along with instructions for customizing download folders.

Enjoy unlimited Usenet and free Newshosting client access for $9.99 a month or $99 a year.

Configuring SafeSearch in the Newshosting Usenet Client

SafeSearch is a new feature in the Newshoting client that helps to filter out adult content.  To enable the SafeSearch option from within the newsreader simply click on Options and then Settings.  Then click on the SafeSearch tab.  To enable SafeSearch simply check the box.  The result is shown below.

Take notice of the statement at the top of the screen shot.  Because “Only items of newsgroups that are explicitly marked as having adult content in them are filtered when SafeSearch is enabled.  So there might still be some items in listings and search results that are considered adult content“.

Enjoy unlimited Usenet and free Newshosting client access for $9.99 a month or $99 a year.

Newshosting Client – Configuring Download Folder Options

You have a few options when configuring how the Newshosting client handles download folders.  With some nice ways to organize downloads.  To access the download folder settings once again click on Options and then Settings.  Then click on the Downloads tab.  The following screen will be displayed.

Take notice of the highlighted section for download folder options.  Starting with the path which is configurable.  Once you decide where you want downloads stored look over the additional options:

  • Create subfolders for each date
  • Create subfolders for each newsgroup
  • Create date folders before newsgroup folders

Check the boxes based on your download folder preferences.  You’ll also notice options below for controlling how the Newshosting client handles PAR2 repairs and auto-unRAR functions.

That’s all there is to it.  You can easily enable the SafeSearch feature (disabled by default) and configure download folder options within a couple minutes.  New members will be happy to know that the Newshosting client comes pre-configured.  With addition tweaks like those above that further enhance your experience.

Enjoy unlimited Usenet and free Newshosting client access for $9.99 a month or $99 a year.
