November Marks 1,200 Days of Retention and Growing!

November marks a new milestone for leading Usenet providers.  As services like Newshosting, UseNetServer, Astraweb and more pass 1,200 days of binary retention.  Some users have come to expect the continued growth in Usenet retention as many large providers spool daily.  Yet the achievement is no less impressive.  As Usenet fans or perhaps fanatics we tip our glass to those continuously improving the experience.  Both in terms of retention growth and overall value (cost, reliability, performance and new, innovative features).

It’s hard to believe we have access to over three years of binary retention.  At 1,200 days you can access newsgroup posts from 3 years and 3 months ago.  As 1,200 days ago was August of 2008.  In comparison Giganews was the clear leader in retention at that time.  Completing their upgrade to 240 days (eight months) of binary retention in September of 2008.  Times have certainly changed since then as a number of leading Usenet providers are within 10 days of each other now.  All with nearly 40 months of binary retention and growing.

The value offered by Usenet providers has also changed quite a bit since 2008.  With services offering unlimited Usenet for $10 or less a month rather than $20-$30 a month.  Not only has the cost dropped significantly.  The services themselves are much improved.  Including SSL encryption, better reliability / performance and extra features like newsreaders, Usenet search, online storage and VPN access.  All for under $10 a month.

We’ll see you right here in 100 days as we all help celebrate 1,300 days of binary retention.  Then in 9 months we’ll happily help celebrate 4 years of retention.  Until then continue to enjoy all the advantages of Usenet.  Visit Newsgroup Reviews to learn more about Usenet retention.  Follow us @NewsgroupRevs for the latest offers.

Newshosting Client : SafeSearch and Download Folders

Earlier this week Newshosting released version 1.1.0 of their popular Usenet client.  Since then we’ve had a few readers ask how the new features are configured.  Rather than answer via email we thought it better to share the tutorial in a post.  That way others can benefit as well.  We’ll be covering the steps to configure SafeSearch.  Along with instructions for customizing download folders.

Enjoy unlimited Usenet and free Newshosting client access for $9.99 a month or $99 a year.

Configuring SafeSearch in the Newshosting Usenet Client

SafeSearch is a new feature in the Newshoting client that helps to filter out adult content.  To enable the SafeSearch option from within the newsreader simply click on Options and then Settings.  Then click on the SafeSearch tab.  To enable SafeSearch simply check the box.  The result is shown below.

Take notice of the statement at the top of the screen shot.  Because “Only items of newsgroups that are explicitly marked as having adult content in them are filtered when SafeSearch is enabled.  So there might still be some items in listings and search results that are considered adult content“.

Enjoy unlimited Usenet and free Newshosting client access for $9.99 a month or $99 a year.

Newshosting Client – Configuring Download Folder Options

You have a few options when configuring how the Newshosting client handles download folders.  With some nice ways to organize downloads.  To access the download folder settings once again click on Options and then Settings.  Then click on the Downloads tab.  The following screen will be displayed.

Take notice of the highlighted section for download folder options.  Starting with the path which is configurable.  Once you decide where you want downloads stored look over the additional options:

  • Create subfolders for each date
  • Create subfolders for each newsgroup
  • Create date folders before newsgroup folders

Check the boxes based on your download folder preferences.  You’ll also notice options below for controlling how the Newshosting client handles PAR2 repairs and auto-unRAR functions.

That’s all there is to it.  You can easily enable the SafeSearch feature (disabled by default) and configure download folder options within a couple minutes.  New members will be happy to know that the Newshosting client comes pre-configured.  With addition tweaks like those above that further enhance your experience.

Enjoy unlimited Usenet and free Newshosting client access for $9.99 a month or $99 a year.

Newshosting Usenet Client v1.1.0 Released

Earlier today Newshosting released a new version of their free newsreader.  Version 1.1.0 of the popular Usenet client includes some nice features.  For those who haven’t tried the reader Newshosting is offering a 14 day free trial.  Better yet our visitors can take advantage of the NH Unlimited special and enjoy unlimited Usenet with SSL encryption and free access to the Newshosting v1.1.0 client for just $9.99 a month or $99 a year.

We’ve had several users email us bragging about how much they like the Newshosting client.  So the v1.1.0 update should only enhance the experience.  For example versioin 1.1.0 introduces a feature called SafeSearch.  Enabling SafeSearch allows you to filter adult content across file groups, image listings and search results.  You can easily enable the SafeSearch feature from within the browser’s settings.

Newshosting Client v1.1.0 – New Features

  • SafeSearch – help filter out adult content (for all you horndogs the SafeSearch feature is optional)
  • Download folders – dates and/or newsgroup subfolders are now created in the download folder.  Also configurable.
  • Minimize-to-tray option

In addition to the v1.1.0 features here are some more highlights of the Newshosting client:

  • Client comes preconfigured
  • Quick file search
  • File preview + automatic thumbnails – very cool feature!
  • Sort groups by file type (image, audio, video, etc)
  • Text and binary newsgroup support
  • Post to text groups directly
  • Auto-unrar and auto-par – no need for WinRAR or QuickPAR

Read our Newshosting newsreader review to learn more about the client.  Existing members can update to version 1.1.0 from within the client or download a new copy from the Newshosting control panel.  While new subscribers can save up to 44% through one of our Newshosting specials.

Newshosting Usenet Client Free For All Members

Newshosting is now ready to roll out their free Usenet client to all NH members.  After a month or so of beta testing the Newshosting team announced earlier this week that the newsreader is available to all subscribers.  If you’ve been waiting to try the new client then now is the perfect time.  We enjoy the features and think you all as well.  New members can sign up for our Newshosting unlimited special – $9.99/mo. or $99/yr.

Current Newshosting members can log into the control panel and download the client directly from there.  With Windows, Mac and Linux versions available.  All three versions of the newsreader are free for members.  With features like Usenet search, auto-PAR, auto-unRAR and video previews the client is one of the best around.

We would encourage those seeking Usenet access to seriously consider Newhosting.  You can visit Newsgroup Reviews to compare all the Usenet providers and learn more about newsgroups.  You’ll find that Newshosting (along with a handful of other services) are leading the industry in value.  Meaning the best features and reliable Usenet access for the cost.  With the newly released client, Newshosting is poised to kick some ass.  Other popular services like UseNetServer and Astraweb should watch out as Newshosting is quickly gaining ground.  Want to the try the new client free for 14 days?  Sign up for their two week free trial.

Here the official press release from Newshosting:

Newshosting Announces Release of Newshosting Usenet Client

ASHBURN, Va., Sept. 20, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Newshosting, the recognized leader in Usenet newsgroup access, today announced the first official release of the Newshosting Usenet Client. It is immediately available in the Newshosting Control Panel, for both current and new customers, at no additional charge. Versions are available for Windows, Mac and Linux.

The Newshosting Usenet Client allows users to search, browse and preview Usenet content with unprecedented ease. Many Usenet clients require a complicated configuration process. With the Newshosting Usenet Client, there is nothing to configure, just a simple login.

Searching has never been easier. Keyword searches with instant results over the entire depth of Newshosting’s 1131 day retention allow you to access thousands of files you may have missed with other Usenet clients. Organizing search results has been simplified with filters to sort by file-type. Video and image thumbnails allow you to preview files before downloading.

The client includes several more features such as: Auto-Repair, Auto-Unpack and Automatic Updates. Auto-Repair checks and repairs all downloads before the complete, which means no more broken downloads. Auto-Unpack will unpack, or unzip, files to your downloads folder automatically.

In just two years, Newshosting has seen retention rates increase from 250 days to 1131 days. Technical and infrastructure enhancements, including recent storage and network upgrades to its North American and European NNTP server farms, have allowed Newshosting to support and spool up to a full 1131 days binary retention and offer over 2 years text retention with 99%+ article completion and lightning-fast, secure first class Usenet access.

Newshosting Hits 3 Years of Binary Retention

What were you doing on August 15, 2008?  No idea?  We don’t remember either but you can find binary posts that old on Newshosting now.  As the service supports 1,095+ days of binary retention and growing.  That’s three years of binary articles.  Cheers to the Newshosting team and others celebrating the big accomplishment this month.  We look forward to continued binary retention growth along with new and innovative features like the newly released Newshosting client.  Not to mention their popular $9.99 unlimited Usenet promotion.

We cover a lot of up and coming services.  Using terms like ‘cool project’ and ‘shows a lot of potential’.  So when we write about an industry leader like Newshosting it takes a moment to switch gears.  Yet the conversation is similar in some positive ways.  As the Newshosting team dedicates a lot of effort to continuously improve the service.  For example so far this year Newshosting has increased binary retention to over three years and developed an easy to use newsreader for their members.  On top of offering the promotion shown above.  Saving new customers up to 44% off unlimited Usenet.  How’s that for progress?

Cheers to the Newshosting ops team for there efforts in supporting the world class service.  We don’t talk much about the infrastructure, massive storage and overhead costs that go into offering 3+ years of retention.  Yet the leaders like Newshosting are moving forward and continuing to grow retention.  While also adding value to the service in other ways like the newsreader with Usenet search capabilities.

Not a Newshosting member?  Here’s your chance to test out the new Usenet client beta - 14 days free.

Newshosting Newsreader Review : Usenet Client Tour

Have you joined the Newshosting client beta testing group yet?  If not sign up for one of the NGR Newshoting NH Unlimited specials ($9.99 a month or $99.99 a year) to gain immediate access to the newsreader beta.  Yesterday we covered the Newshosting client beta and today we want to share our impressions of the new client in our Newshosting newsreader review.  Along with a guided tour of the Usenet browser beta.

Let’s get started.  For those who want to try out the Newshosting client for yourselves sign up for Usenet access.  You can take advantage of one of our special offers or sign up for a free trial.  After signing up you will receive an email with information on the newsreader beta.  You can also access the Newshosting control panel to download the latest version.  The client is available for Windows, Mac and Linux.

Newshosting Newsreader Review : Usenet Client Tour

Now that you’ve downloaded the client there isn’t much to the installation.  We tested the newsreader on Windows 7 (64-bit).  The install was a breeze.  Simply choose the installation folder and whether or not to start the client at the end.  The first time you open the client it will ask for your credentials – username and password.  New members can find that information in the welcome email.  If you ever forget your password Newshosting has a ‘Lost Password’ link in the login area of their site.  We logged right in without issue.

The first thing we did upon opening the Newshoting newsreader was to search for content.  In our case for testing purposes we searched for ‘Ubuntu 11.04′ as you can see in the upper right hand corner of the screenshot above.  The result is a detailed listing of Ubuntu results.

Now that we have results there are a number of options for sorting and filtering.

You can set the default sort order of the results to:

  • Date
  • Size
  • NFO
  • Preview
  • Language

As well as filtering down the language:

  • English
  • Dutch
  • French
  • Spanish
  • Italian

Beyond the global defaults you can sort the results by clicking on the header above any column.  For example we sorted by the date.  The results pane details the name of the post along with file size, date, poster and newsgroup.  You will also notice some icons just above the results.  Those let you filter the results by file type.

Filter options include:

  • Everything
  • Video
  • Audio
  • Documents
  • ISO Images
  • Software
  • Images

Once you find the desired content you can start downloading with a simple double click.  No need to save off an NZB file or do anything else.  Double clicking the name will queue the file and start the download.

At this point the Newshosting client is doing the work in the background.  If you would like to view the download progress click on the ‘Transfer’ image at the top of the reader.  Doing so will display the download queue.  In this case you can see the Ubuntu parts being downloaded.  As well as a performance graph to the bottom left.  We are on a 25 mbps connection.  At 3.26 MB/s the Newshosting newsreader maxed our connection.  We could still browse the Internet but if you would rather leave more bandwidth for other activities the reader will let you limit the connection speed.  We prefer really fast downloads and Newshosting always delivers on speed.

For our Ubuntu test download the Newshosting client took care of the rest.  After downloading the archive it automatically extracted the ISO file into a target folder named for our Ubuntu title.  I doubt it needed repair but if so Newshosting would automatically take care of that as well.  All of which is done in the background.  You can find the desired content and the Newshosting client will take it from there.

Since the Newshosting reader just launched I’m sure our review just scratches the surface of the features in the client.  So far we’ve really enjoyed the client and look forward to bringing you more details in the future.

Here’s a quick summary of some of the Usenet browser features:

  • Usenet search engines – Newshosting, Binsearch, Nzbindex, Nfonews
  • File preview, thumbnail views (shown below)
  • Automatically extract files – auto un-rar
  • Automatically repair damaged archives – auto par
  • Sort groups by file type – audio, video, images, etc.
  • Read NFO files inside client when provided
  • Supports text and binary groups
  • Post directly to text groups

We’ll end our Newshosting client review with a screenshot of the thumbnail image previews.  Again for testing purposes we chose our search criteria.  In this case ‘Lamborghini’.  As you can see we chose the ‘images’ tab and Newshosting presented our results in thumbnail view.  Depending on your search criteria you could easily have hundreds if not thousands of image previews.

Here are a few tips and tricks for the Newshosting client:

  • Enable SSL – by default the Newhosting client is set to standard connection on port 119.  For privacy purposes and perhaps to avoid throttling by some ISP’s we suggest you switch over to SSL..  To do so click on Options – Settings.  Then go to the connection tab.  Click the ‘Prefer SSL connections if available’ checkbox and choose port 443.  This isn’t a must but we prefer our privacy both on the Internet via a Personal VPN service and on Usenet via SSL.
  • Delete Private Data – again go to Options – Settings.  Then the General tab.  This is purely a personal preference.  We like to delete private data on application exit.  You can choose whether or not to delete search history, favorites, download history and bookmarks.
  • Auto Shutdown – when downloading you can queue up several selections and click the ‘auto shutdown’ button at the top of the screen and walk away.
  • Right click – we noticed that using the right mouse button opens up lots of options in the reader.  So wherever you happen to be right click and see what options are available.  This presents some nice shortcuts and additional benefits of the client.
