2019 Best Usenet Providers

You’ll notice that we celebrate the accomplishments of multiple newsgroup services with our Editors Choice Awards.  The reason is that we enjoy a number of Usenet providers and feel each offers an advantage over the others.  With criteria to include extra features, high retention, completion, performance, reliability and value.

Congratulations to all of our 2019 NGR Editor’s Choice Award winners.  We would like to thank each provider for their ongoing efforts in supporting the continued growth of Usenet.  The list of award recipients starts with Newshosting followed closely by UseNetServer, Easynews, Eweka, and Supernews.

Let’s take a closer look at our 2019 NGR Editor’s Choice winners for “Best Usenet Providers“:

Newshosting – Usenet + VPN + Client with Search

Newshosting Special

Expect the best performance and premium features for a value from Newshosting.  Including unlimited Usenet downloads and free access to their popular Newshosting Usenet client.  A very nice addition!  Along with uncapped speeds and free 256-bit SSL encryption.  Connect to their North American or European servers and enjoy unlimited Usenet.  All for just $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year (with VPN) via our NGR special.

Newshosting offers 4,000+ days of binary retention along with 1,400 days of text posts.  Subscribers enjoy unlimited Usenet access, Newshosting Usenet client, 256-bit SSL, uncapped speed and 24/7 support.  Take advantage of the Newshosting $9.99/mo. and $99.99/yr. unlimited Usenet specials.

UseNetServer – Usenet + VPN + Search

UseNetServer Special

UseNetServer provides an excellent mix of quality and value.  Since releasing their popular $10 unlimited Usenet special the service has grown rapidly.  UNS was always a staple in the industry but at $10 a month or $95.40 a year they’re really hard to pass up.  In addition to value, UseNetServer offers high retention and UNS Global Search.  Those who sign up for the UNS $95 a year deal also receive free unlimited VPN access.

UseNetServer offers 4,000+ days of binary retention along with two years of text posts.  Subscribers enjoy unlimited Usenet access, 256-bit SSL, 20 connections, uncapped speed and 24/7 live support.  Take advantage of the UNS $10/mo. and $95.40/yr. unlimited Usenet specials.

Easynews – Web Usenet Interface

Easynews Web Usenet

Easynews has everything you could ask for in a Usenet service including web access.  A feature that sets them apart from our other award winners.  The Easynews web interface allows users to browse newsgroups and stream content without the need for a newsreader.  Simply open your favorite web browser.  With third party apps for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Android mobile devices.  Easynews offers 4,000 days of NNTP retention if you want to connect via newsreader.  Web retention is over 2,600 days.  Take the new web interface for a test drive.

Easynews offers web Usenet access in addition to iPhone and Android apps.  Especially useful to those new to Usenet and others who would rather avoid the need for additional software.  Take advantage of the Easynews 14 day free trial and $9.95 unlimited NNTP offers.

Eweka – European Usenet Access

Eweka Special

Eweka is our favorite Dutch Usenet provider.  You will be hard pressed to find a better European newsgroup service.  They offer the highest retention in the region along with high speed downloads.  You will need to have a Dutch IP address to sign up.  You can use a VPN to subscribe to the service.  After you sign up you can connect to their servers from anywhere in the world.  Eweka is perhaps the best kept secret in Usenet.

Eweka offers 4,000+ days of binary retention and 1,265 days of text posts.  Subscribers enjoy unlimited Usenet, 256-bit SSL, 300 Mbps speeds, and 24/7 support for just €7,50 a month.  The special also includes a free upgrade to 100 Mbit which normally costs an extra €2,10 a month.

Supernews – Usenet Only Access

Supernews Special

Supernews was one of the first Usenet providers in the market.  I remember using their service along with Newsguy in the late 90’s.  That may seem like a long time ago but Supernews remains one of the top names in the industry.  The newspaper man is back with a good value on Usenet access.  The only difference is that Supernews doesn’t include extras like software and VPN.  Otherwise the quality is excellent.

Supernews offers 2,350+ days of binary retention along with 4,500 days of text posts.  Members enjoy unlimited Usenet, 256-bit SSL, 30 connections, and 24/7 tech support.  Take advantage of our Supernews deal and sign up for $9.99/mo. or $99/yr. and enjoy unlimited Usenet access.

We hope you’ve enjoyed our 2019 Editor’s Choice Awards for the best Usenet providers.  Please help us recognize and congratulate the winners for their accomplishments.  We look forward to the year ahead.

UseNetServer Innovation Challenge

The UseNetServer Innovation Challenge is a competition that is being held to honor the release of the Raspberry Pi 2. This challenge comes in the form of a question,”What can you do with a Raspberry Pi 2?”  Prizes for the competition include a Raspberry Pi 2, $100 Visa gift card, and 1 month of free Usenet access.

UNS Innovation Challenge

Creativity is key to the UNS Innovation Challenge.  The contest will be judged based on four criteria, each of which will be worth 25% of your overall score.  We are excited to be helping UNS judge the event this summer and look forward to checking out your project.  Make sure to include the UNS service in your creation.

Here’s the criteria in which contestants will be judged:

  • Creativity – As consumers, almost everything that we need when it comes to living, working and playing already exists. But how can we transform modern inventions in order to change the status quo? Allow your creative juices to flow when thinking of your innovation.
  • Originality – Is your idea unique and unlike anything else this world has ever seen? When drafting your invention, consider whether it’s one of a kind, or if something like it already exists.
  • Feasibility – How realistic is your idea? Is it too complex to come to life? When thinking of your invention, ensure that it’s feasible for others to make.
  • Inclusion of Service – Does your invention include the UsenetServer service? Think of a way that the Raspberry Pi 2 can be integrated into the native downloader, search tool, or any other feature included with UsenetServer.

Here is a list of dates of the contest.

  • June 17th – July 17th – Accepting Submissions
  • July 20th – August 3rd – Judging of Entries
  • August 7th – Announce Innovation Challenge Winner

For those that are unfamiliar with a Raspberry Pi, it was started as a group of credit card-sized, single board computers developed in the UK and used as a way to teach basic computer science in schools. Because it runs on a Linux kernel and is open source, there have been many uses for it outside of the original application including being an inexpensive solution for web surfing.  The Raspberry Pi 2 is the current version and has a  900 MHz quad-core ARMv7 Cortex-A7 CPU, and has 1 GB of RAM. It is also fully backwards compatible with the original Raspberry Pi.

What can you do with a Raspberry Pi 2? Only you know the answer to that. The possibilities are endless. Be sure to get your submissions in no later then July 17th for a chance to win one of the great prizes including a Raspberry Pi 2, $100 Visa gift card, and a free month of Usenet service. Feel free to get out there and give it a go. You’ll never know what innovations you are capable of unless you try.

UseNetServer VPN Review

UseNetServer now offers VPN access as an optional add-on to their popular Usenet service.  They went a step further in offering our readers free VPN with the UNS High-Speed Plus Special.  You can enjoy free VPN access by signing up for a year of unlimited Usenet for $95.40.  That works out to just $7.95 a month for unlimited Usenet and VPN.  In a moment I’ll show you just how much value the VPN adds to your account.

UseNetServer VPN Deal

I’ve looked at hundreds of VPN services over the years for our VPNSP.com review site so I know what to look for in a good VPN service.  I can tell you with 100% certainty that UNS is offering access to one of the best VPN networks in the world.  This isn’t just a cheap add-on to their existing Usenet offering.  It’s fast, reliable VPN access as you’ll see in just a moment.  You’ll be hard pressed to find a VPN service with better performance.

I won’t bore you with too many technical details.  Just the basics.  The UseNetServer VPN service offers free client software for Windows and Mac users.  The VPN uses 256-bit AES encryption to secure your data and ensure your online privacy.  Members have access to 70 servers in 17 countries around the world.

Here’s a full list of server locations:

  • United States – Ashburn, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Phoenix, San Jose, Seattle.
  • United Kingdom – London
  • Netherlands – Amsterdam (10 servers)
  • Australia – Sydney
  • Belgium – Brussels
  • Brazil – Sao Paulo
  • Denmark – Copenhagen
  • France – Paris
  • Germany – Frankfurt
  • Hungary – Budapest
  • Japan – Tokyo
  • Poland – Warsaw
  • Singapore – Singapore
  • South Korea – Seuol
  • Spain – Madrid
  • Sweden – Stockholm
  • Switzerland – Zurich

Let’s start by answering some common questions I think our readers might have about the UNS VPN:

1.  Do you need a VPN to secure your Usenet account?

No.  UNS includes SSL with their high-speed plus plan so you don’t need VPN for Usenet.

2.  If you don’t need VPN for Usenet then why add it?

A good VPN can help stop your ISP from throttling or spying on you, block advertisers from following you online, protect you on Wi-Fi hotspots and unblock content restrictions around the world.  That’s just a few of the benefits a good VPN like UNS has to offer.

3.  Does UseNetServer log VPN usage?

UNS doesn’t record, monitor or store logs of your VPN activity.

4.  Does the UNS VPN allow P2P / torrent access?

Yes, UseNetServer allows P2P traffic on their network.

5.  How many connections does UNS allow for their VPN?

Install the VPN software on as many computers as you like and connect on up to two devices at a time.

6.  Does UNS VPN include NAT firewall?

Yes, UNS includes NAT firewall free of charge to all VPN users.

Now that we have a few questions out of the way let’s dive right into UseNetServer’s VPN service.  I started by installing the free UNS client software on my Windows 8 system.  Here’s a look at the user interface:

UseNetServer VPN client

As you can see I connected to a UNS VPN server in Amsterdam.  The software is very easy to use.  I simply chose the server I wanted to connect to along with the protocol and clicked connect.  Without going into too much detail I would suggest using OpenVPN (TCP or UDP) for the highest level of encryption.  I get the best performance using OpenVPN UDP for streaming sites like Netflix or BBC iPlayer.

Performance was very good on the servers I connected to which included locations in the United States, Canada and throughout Europe.  You can expect any VPN to reduce your Internet speed some as the data is encrypted.  With that said UNS does an excellent job with a minimal hit to performance.  If you experience slower speeds when accessing content from sites like Netflix the VPN will stop the ISP throttling and actually increase your connection speed.  It can make a huge difference when you’re trying to stream movies and tv shows.

As you can see UseNetServer put a lot of time and effort into it’s VPN offering.  It stands alone as one of the best values in the VPN space.  Getting it free with their $95 annual UNS deal is by far the best value in Usenet as well.  I highly recommend the service.  If you can afford the annual account it will save you a lot over purchasing Usenet and VPN separately.  If not you can always add VPN to any UNS plan at a very reasonable price.

Sign up for the UNS High-Speed Plus Promo to try UNS VPN.  Annual sign ups include free VPN service.

UseNetServer Holiday Special

The team over at UseNetServer is having some extra fun this holiday season.  They’re giving new and existing members who don’t already have the VPN feature a free month of VPN access.  Better yet they are offering free VPN with unlimited Usenet for just $95.40 a year.  You can also sign up for monthly Usenet with a free month of VPN for just $10 a month.  The UNS holiday promotion is live and will run through December 31st.

UNS Holiday Promotion

If you haven’t had a chance to try UseNetServer I strongly suggest you sign up for an account to see how much UNS has to offer.  Even before the free VPN promotion UNS was one of the best values in Usenet.  Now it’s without a doubt the best deal for those who go with their annual promotion.  The VPN access alone is worth more than the price you’ll pay for Usenet and VPN combined.  Connect on two devices at a time for VPN.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the UNS holiday special with VPN:

  • UNS High-Speed Plus (unlimited Usenet) – $10 a month with a free month of VPN, add VPN after that for $4.99 a month
  • UNS High-Speed Plus (unlimited Usenet + free VPN) – $95.40 a year (no additional cost for VPN)

As you can see the price of the monthly special is $10 which is well below the retail price.  Those who sign up for monthly access will receive a free month of VPN access and can continue using the VPN for just $4.99 a month.  Where things start getting even more exciting is with the annual plan.  Pay just $95.40 for a year of unlimited Usenet access and receive full access to their network of 70 VPN servers across 17 countries free of charge.  That’s an outstanding deal from UNS.

On the Usenet side UNS has been listed at or near the top of our rankings for years now.  UseNetServer offers over 2,300 days of binary retention and growing.  Along with NNTP servers in the United States and Europe.  You can use up to 20 connections but you won’t need that many.  All members have access to UNS global search.  The search engine will help you find newsgroup content.  The free VPN is icing on the cake.

Read our UseNetServer review to learn more or sign up during the UNS Holiday Promotion and enjoy!

Here’s a quick breakdown of the UNS High-Speed special with VPN:

  • UNS High-Speed Plus (unlimited Usenet) – $10 a month, add VPN for $4.99 a month
  • UNS High-Speed Plus (unlimited Usenet + free VPN) – $95.40 a year (no additional cost for VPN)

As you can see the price of the monthly special is $10 which is well below the retail price.  Those who sign up for monthly access can add VPN for $4.99 a month.

They are currently only second to Newshosting.  For those seeking VPN access UNS would easily be our top pick.  UseNetServer offers nearly 2,200 days of binary retention and growing.  Along with NNTP servers in the United States and Europe.  You can use up to 20 connections but you won’t need that many.  All members have access to UNS global search.  The search engine will help you find newsgroup content.

UseNetServer Global Search 2.0

You might think it’s a quiet time for Usenet providers but a few are still making waves with new innovations.  UseNetServer is certainly a top provider in the market today and they continue to improve the service.  The release of UseNetServer (UNS) Global Search 2.0 is a huge improvement to their search engine.  Think of it as Binsearch on steroids.  That’s saying a lot because I’m a big fan of Binsearch.  UNS Global Search 2.0 takes it a step further offering real-time results across their full range of binary retention.  Best of all it’s free to all UNS members.  Those new to UNS can sign up for unlimited Usenet access for just $10 a month or $95 a year.

UseNetServer Global Search 2.0

Are you having trouble finding the content you want using newsgroups?  If so then I suggest you give the new UseNetServer global search 2.0 a try.  Prior to the new 2.0 Usenet search engine UNS many users relied on newsreaders like Newsbin Pro or NewsLeecher with built-in search.  Others would use NZB sites to find content.  Both are similar to the approach of UNS global search 2.0.  The difference is that you can now search for content across UseNetServer’s full range of binary retention without leaving their site.  Once you find the desired content you can pull the NZB file into your favorite Usenet client to download the related content.

Here are some of the new features and improvements in UNS Global Search 2.0:

  • A subject based on keywords can be performed for all article sets in the binary newsgroups spanning UseNetServer’s full retention and results can be filtered by specific poster names and or newsgroups.
  • Individual posts are collapsed into one single result for each article set that makes up the entirety of a post by a poster or posters.
  • Global Search 2.0 allows UNS to service many more queries faster.  This results in a lesser strain on the hardware and much faster search results.

If you’re not already using UNS I definitely recommend the service.  They have some of the fastest servers in the US and Europe.  Members enjoy acess to over 2,100 days of binary retention and growing.  Along with 20 connections and unlimited Usenet downloads for $10 a month.  You’ll also enjoy unlimited access to the new UNS Global Search 2.0 engine.  You can read our UseNetServer review to learn more about the service.
