Which Usenet Provider Offers the Best Value?

We’re often asked our opinion on which Usenet providers offer the best value.  While it would be easy to point users to our Editors Choice list we always follow up first and ask for more information.  As our response would differ based on what the user is looking for in a Usenet service.  For pure Usenet we really like UNS and Astraweb.  Yet when it comes to the best Usenet value neither provider would be at the top of our list.

For us the question of who offers the best Usenet value goes beyond newsgroup access.  That wasn’t always the case but now some leading providers are offering bundled services (newsreaders, Usenet search, online storage, VPN, etc.) along with unlimited Usenet access for less than $10 a month.  While we highly recommend both UNS and Astraweb these other services offer more value-added features along with newsgroup access.

Best Usenet value

Let’s take a look at some of the best Usenet values and the free add-on features offered by each provider.

Newshosting : Unlimited Usenet + Newsreader + Usenet Search

Newshosting Specials

Newshosting is our pick for the best Usenet value.  Along with unlimited Usenet access they offer members a great newsreader (Windows, Mac, Linux) and Usenet search engine.  Not to mention high retention, free SSL and excellent performance.  All for just $9.99 a month or $99 a year.  Unlimited Usenet along with a newsreader and built-in search engine for $9.99 is quite a value!

NewsDemon : Unlimited Usenet + Newsreader + Online Storage

Demon Deal

NewsDemon is another outstanding Usenet value.  Offering members unlimited Usenet access, a free copy of News Rover and unlimited online storage.  Along with high retention, free SSL and excellent performance.  All for just $9.99 a month.  Unlimited Usenet downloads along with News Rover newsreader and free online storage is an amazing value for just $9.99 a month!

Newshosting and NewsDemon top our list of the best Usenet values.  With each offering unlimited Usenet and excellent add-on features for less than $10 a month. Some other good Usenet values include Easynews (Usenet + web interface for $9.98 a month), ThunderNews (Usenet + newsreader for $10.49 a month) and Ngroups (Usenet + storage + VPN for $9.99 a month).

Newshosting Full Header Retention

Newshosting shared some exciting news with uses earlier today by announcing that the service will support full header retention.  Their engineering team has been hard at work to make full headers a reality.  In the coming weeks users will automatically transition to the new set of article headers with different article numbers.  You don’t have to wait though since Newshosting will let you migrate over now.  We’ll show you how in a moment.

Newshosting full header retention

Would you like to go ahead and migrate over to full header retention?  If so be aware that you’ll need to make some changes both on the Newshosting site and likely in your Usenet client to accommodate the new article numbers.  The first step is to log into the Newshosting control panel and click the “Change XOVER Server” link.

The next step depends on your newsreader.  Here’s a summary from their new headers FAQ:

How do I get my newsclient updated with new headers?

Newsleecher: No problems detected when switching. However, this may not be uniform across all versions.
* Right-click and select Wipe Group Cache. You can then download the headers again.

Newsbin Pro: [16:07:55] ERROR – Server:NewshostingServer Reports bogus MaxGroup > MinSpool Groups numbers :878:338016 – alt.binaries.pictures.rail
Must unsubscribe/resubscribe to group
* Right-click on the subscribed group and choose Post Storage > Delete Stored Posts. Then you can download the headers again.

Grabit: Incrimental Update fails when retreiving new headers, causing all headers to disappear.
* Right-click on the newsgroup (or the server) and choose Full Update.

Xnews: old headers w/o already downloaded bodies fail to load.
* Click Group > Refresh Headers Special
* Select the entire range
* Select “Retreive and INclude read articles”
* Click Okay

News Rover: old headers w/o stored bodies fail to load.
Right-click on newsgroup and choose “Redownload list of available messages.”

Thunderbird and Outlook Express/Windows Mail have to have the group physically removed/unsubscribed and re-added.

Unison: Right click on the newsgroup then click “reset newsgroup”

If you’re new to Newshosting and would like to test out the service they are offering a 14 day, 30 GB free trial.

Our friends over at Newsbin provide a thoughtful guide on how to download headers with their client.  While you have some other good choices like Newsleecher and Grabit, we find Newsbin to be very good for headers.  Especially for groups that have a large number of headers.  Allowing you to download all headers or the latest in a group.  You can also easily search for newsgroups and subscribe to them.

With the popularity of Usenet search engines and binary clients like the Newshosting browser and SABnzbd I’m sure some of you wonder what we’re talking about.  That’s ok.  If you’re happy with the way you currently find Usenet content then just ignore this post and enjoy.  If you ever experience issues searching for content through other sites and client search engines then headers will be there for you to fall back on in the future.

Exactly what is a header anyway?  We’ll share a quick explanation without getting too technical.  Each article posted to a newsgroup includes header information.  You can think of Usenet headers being similar to email headers.  For Usenet a header will show information like the subject of the post, date posted, article number and list the newsgroups in which it was posted.  There’s more but that gives you a brief summary of headers.

Usenet Providers Pass 1,500 Days of Binary Retention

Several Usenet providers will be celebrating a new milestone this week.  As UseNetServer, Newshosting, NewsDemon, Astraweb, ThunderNews and more pass 1,500 days of binary retention.  We join other Usenet fans in celebrating the industry leaders that continue to grow retention and innovate their services.  Remember that not so long ago we were discussing retention in terms of days.  Now we’re over four years of binary retention and growing.  You can enjoy unlimited Usenet access with free extras for just $10 a month.

We now have access to over four years years of binary Usenet posts.  At 1,500 days you can access newsgroup posts from over 4 years ago.  As 1,500 days ago was August of 2008.  Back then the highest retention to be found was 240 days, which works out to around 8 months.  Now we can all explore over 49 months of Usenet posts for a fraction of the 2008 price of new server access.

The quality offered by leading Usenet providers has also progressed since 2008.  Back then providers offered unlimited Usenet for $20-$30 a month.  Fast forward to 2012 and the price is half that much.  Not only has the cost dropped significantly.  The services have brought many innovations.  Including better performance and additional features like newsreaders, search engines and online storage.  All for under $10 a month.

We look forward to celebrating again in 100 days as Usenet hits 1,600 days of binary retention.  That mark will be surpassed around the end of the year.  Until then continue enjoying the best Usenet has to offer.  Visit Newsgroup Reviews to learn more about Usenet.  Follow us @NewsgroupRevs for the latest offers.

Usenet Celebrates 1,400 Days Binary Retention

This week several of our favorite Usenet providers are crossing 1,400 days of binary retention.  As services including UseNetServer, Newshosting, NewsDemon and Astraweb cross 1,400 days and continue to grow daily.  We celebrate the continued increase of retention and other innovations helping Usenet grow.  Just a few years ago we were discussing retention in terms of days.  Now we’re nearing four years of binary retention!

Usenet fans now have access to over three and a half years of binary newsgroup posts.  At 1,400 days you can access newsgroup posts from 3 years and 10 months ago.  As 1,400 days ago was August of 2008.  Back then the highest retention to be found was 240 days, which works out to around 8 months.  Now we can all explore over 46 months of Usenet posts for a fraction of the 2008 price of newsgroup access.

The quality and value offered by Usenet providers has also progressed since 2008.  Back then services offered unlimited Usenet for $20-$30 a month.  Fast forward to 2012 and the price is half that much.  Not only has the price dropped significantly.  Users now enjoy free extras.  Including faster speeds and additional features like newsreaders, Usenet search and online storage.  All for under $10 a month.

We look forward to celebrating again in 100 days as Usenet hits 1,500 days of binary retention.  Surpassing 4 years of retention in the meantime.  Until then continue enjoying the best Usenet has to offer.  Visit Newsgroup Reviews to learn more about Usenet.
