Newshosting Client – Pausing Individual Downloads

Today we’d like to talk about a new feature in version 1.2.1 of Newshosting’s Usenet client.  Namely the ability to pause individual downloads.  As we’ve recently covered other enhancements like download scheduler and NZB auto-import.  Pausing individual downloads gives you more control over you’re queue.  As you can pause a download to allow others to finish.  Especially useful if you’re waiting for a particular download to complete.

The Newshosting newsreader is free to all members.  Download the latest version for Windows, Mac or Linux.  If you aren’t already using Newshosting we highly recommend their service.  New members can enjoy unlimited Usenet access with the client and Usenet search for only $9.99 a month or $99 a year.

Newshosting Client : Pausing Individual Downloads

To pause individual downloads inside the Newshosting client you’ll want to take a look at your queue.  To do so simply click on the Transfers icon at the top of the screen.  From there you can pause and resume individual downloads.  Giving you more flexibility in managing your downloads in the queue.

To pause a download right click on the description and click on Pause.

To resume a download right click on the description and click on Resume.

That’s all there is to it.  Now you can easily pause and resume individual downloads.  Enjoy downloading!

Newshosting Client : NZB Auto-Import

NZB auto-import is one of the new features in the latest version of Newshosting’s popular Usenet client.  Version 1.2.1 brought the newsreader out of beta and included NZB auto-import along with a new download scheduler and the ability to pause individual downloads.  Last Friday we talked about setting up the download scheduler.  Today we’d like to follow that up with a quick guide for configuring the NZB auto-import feature.

The Newshosting Usenet client is free to all subscribers.  You can download the latest version from their site.  If you aren’t already a Newshosting member we highly recommend you check out their special offer.  Enjoy unlimited newsgroup access with the newsreader and Usenet search for only $9.99 a month or $99 a year.

Newshosting Client : Configuring NZB Auto-Import

Setting up NZB auto-import in Newshosting’s client is a simple process.  Start by opening the client and focus on the menu options at the top of the screen.  Click on Options – Settings or press CTRL+, (ctrl comma).  After the settings box opens go down to the Inport icon on the left.  You’ll then see the following screen:

As you can see we’ve already configured the auto import folder in our screenshot above.  You’ll want to do the same.  First clicking on the Auto Import Folder checkbox.  Then choose the Folder to watch.  This is the folder the Newshosting client will ping for NZB files.  Anytime it finds an NZB file in the target folder it will automatically import it into the client.  Now you have two options.  You can let Newshosting delete the NZB file after import or move the NZB files to another folder after import.  Our preference was to move them to another folder.

That’s all there is to setting up Newshosting’s new NZB auto-import feature.  Enjoy downloading!

Newshosting Client : Download Scheduler

Newshosting released version 1.2.1 of their popular Usenet client a couple weeks ago.  Marking the first public ‘non-beta’ version of the newsreader.  They didn’t just remove the ‘beta’ tag though as version 1.2.1 included some nice new features including a download scheduler, nzb auto-import and the ability to pause individual downloads.  Today we’d like to walk you through setting up the new download scheduler.

Not a Newshosting member?  Enjoy unlimited Usenet with the free client for just $9.99 a month or $99 a year.

Newshosting Client : Configuring the Download Scheduler

Setting up the new download schedule in Newshosting’s client is a breeze.  Simply open the client and look to the menu options at the top of the screen.  Click on Options – Settings or press CTRL+, (ctrl comma).  After the settings box opens go down to the Scheduler icon on the left.  You’ll then see the following screen:

The first thing you want to do is enable the scheduler.  To do that simply click the Use Download Scheduler checkbox.  Then you can go through and select which hours you want the newsreader to download.  When your done making selections click Apply and then OK.  That’s all there is to setting up the download scheduler.  Stay tunes as next week we’ll take a look at the nzb auto-import feature and pausing individual downloads.

Newshosting Usenet Client Version 1.2.1

The Newshosting client v 1.2.1 comes with several enhancements.  We’ve enjoyed the newsreader since the first beta was released in August and are excited to share that it’s now out of beta.  You can read our Newshosting client review to learn more about the Usenet browser.  Better yet download it for yourself.  The new version 1.2.1 is freely available for new and existing members.  Those new to the service can enjoy unlimited Usenet access with the free client and search functionality for just $9.99 a month or $99 a year.

Here’s a full list of new features and enhancements in the Newshosting client v1.2.1

New Features

• Downloads can be paused individually

• NZB Auto Import. Monitors a folder for NZB files, imports and deletes or moves them afterwards.

• Download Scheduler. The download scheduler can be enabled in the settings dialog. It’s configurable based on time-of-day for different types of downloads, normal downloads, previews and images. This will help you take advantage of your bandwidth when you’re not using it for other purposes.

Enhancements

• Download scheduler can now be disabled on a per-download basis.

• Additional default window sizes.

• If a download is paused due to the download scheduler it now shows when the download will resume.

• New RAR version.

• Drop support for NZB files. Dropping an NZB over the main application window imports the NZB.

• An alert message is displayed if a user tries to close the settings dialog without having saved the changes made.

• Reorganized the settings dialog because of the new features included.

Bug Fixes

• Previously used window size and position wasn’t restored on Mac OS X.

• In some situations the download scheduler prevented some downloads to start although they should have started.

• Windows XP now remembers the the path that was used in the open file dialog.

• In some situations the previous window size wasn’t restored properly in Windows.

Cheers to the Newshosting client developers for their latest innovations to the popular newsreader.  We look forward to their continued efforts in the year ahead.

Newshosting Client : SafeSearch and Download Folders

Earlier this week Newshosting released version 1.1.0 of their popular Usenet client.  Since then we’ve had a few readers ask how the new features are configured.  Rather than answer via email we thought it better to share the tutorial in a post.  That way others can benefit as well.  We’ll be covering the steps to configure SafeSearch.  Along with instructions for customizing download folders.

Enjoy unlimited Usenet and free Newshosting client access for $9.99 a month or $99 a year.

Configuring SafeSearch in the Newshosting Usenet Client

SafeSearch is a new feature in the Newshoting client that helps to filter out adult content.  To enable the SafeSearch option from within the newsreader simply click on Options and then Settings.  Then click on the SafeSearch tab.  To enable SafeSearch simply check the box.  The result is shown below.

Take notice of the statement at the top of the screen shot.  Because “Only items of newsgroups that are explicitly marked as having adult content in them are filtered when SafeSearch is enabled.  So there might still be some items in listings and search results that are considered adult content“.

Enjoy unlimited Usenet and free Newshosting client access for $9.99 a month or $99 a year.

Newshosting Client – Configuring Download Folder Options

You have a few options when configuring how the Newshosting client handles download folders.  With some nice ways to organize downloads.  To access the download folder settings once again click on Options and then Settings.  Then click on the Downloads tab.  The following screen will be displayed.

Take notice of the highlighted section for download folder options.  Starting with the path which is configurable.  Once you decide where you want downloads stored look over the additional options:

  • Create subfolders for each date
  • Create subfolders for each newsgroup
  • Create date folders before newsgroup folders

Check the boxes based on your download folder preferences.  You’ll also notice options below for controlling how the Newshosting client handles PAR2 repairs and auto-unRAR functions.

That’s all there is to it.  You can easily enable the SafeSearch feature (disabled by default) and configure download folder options within a couple minutes.  New members will be happy to know that the Newshosting client comes pre-configured.  With addition tweaks like those above that further enhance your experience.

Newshosting Newsreader Review : Usenet Client Tour

Have you joined the Newshosting client beta testing group yet?  If not sign up for one of the NGR Newshoting NH Unlimited specials ($9.99 a month or $99.99 a year) to gain immediate access to the newsreader beta.  Yesterday we covered the Newshosting client beta and today we want to share our impressions of the new client in our Newshosting newsreader review.  Along with a guided tour of the Usenet browser beta.

Let’s get started.  For those who want to try out the Newshosting client for yourselves sign up for Usenet access.  You can take advantage of one of our special offers or sign up for a free trial.  After signing up you will receive an email with information on the newsreader beta.  You can also access the Newshosting control panel to download the latest version.  The client is available for Windows, Mac and Linux.

Newshosting Newsreader Review : Usenet Client Tour

Now that you’ve downloaded the client there isn’t much to the installation.  We tested the newsreader on Windows 7 (64-bit).  The install was a breeze.  Simply choose the installation folder and whether or not to start the client at the end.  The first time you open the client it will ask for your credentials – username and password.  New members can find that information in the welcome email.  If you ever forget your password Newshosting has a ‘Lost Password’ link in the login area of their site.  We logged right in without issue.

The first thing we did upon opening the Newshoting newsreader was to search for content.  In our case for testing purposes we searched for ‘Ubuntu 11.04’ as you can see in the upper right hand corner of the screenshot above.  The result is a detailed listing of Ubuntu results.

Now that we have results there are a number of options for sorting and filtering.

You can set the default sort order of the results to:

  • Date
  • Size
  • NFO
  • Preview
  • Language

As well as filtering down the language:

  • English
  • Dutch
  • French
  • Spanish
  • Italian

Beyond the global defaults you can sort the results by clicking on the header above any column.  For example we sorted by the date.  The results pane details the name of the post along with file size, date, poster and newsgroup.  You will also notice some icons just above the results.  Those let you filter the results by file type.

Filter options include:

  • Everything
  • Video
  • Audio
  • Documents
  • ISO Images
  • Software
  • Images

Once you find the desired content you can start downloading with a simple double click.  No need to save off an NZB file or do anything else.  Double clicking the name will queue the file and start the download.

At this point the Newshosting client is doing the work in the background.  If you would like to view the download progress click on the ‘Transfer’ image at the top of the reader.  Doing so will display the download queue.  In this case you can see the Ubuntu parts being downloaded.  As well as a performance graph to the bottom left.  We are on a 25 mbps connection.  At 3.26 MB/s the Newshosting newsreader maxed our connection.  We could still browse the Internet but if you would rather leave more bandwidth for other activities the reader will let you limit the connection speed.  We prefer really fast downloads and Newshosting always delivers on speed.

For our Ubuntu test download the Newshosting client took care of the rest.  After downloading the archive it automatically extracted the ISO file into a target folder named for our Ubuntu title.  I doubt it needed repair but if so Newshosting would automatically take care of that as well.  All of which is done in the background.  You can find the desired content and the Newshosting client will take it from there.

Since the Newshosting reader just launched I’m sure our review just scratches the surface of the features in the client.  So far we’ve really enjoyed the client and look forward to bringing you more details in the future.

Here’s a quick summary of some of the Usenet browser features:

  • Usenet search engines – Newshosting, Binsearch, Nzbindex, Nfonews
  • File preview, thumbnail views (shown below)
  • Automatically extract files – auto un-rar
  • Automatically repair damaged archives – auto par
  • Sort groups by file type – audio, video, images, etc.
  • Read NFO files inside client when provided
  • Supports text and binary groups
  • Post directly to text groups

We’ll end our Newshosting client review with a screenshot of the thumbnail image previews.  Again for testing purposes we chose our search criteria.  In this case ‘Lamborghini’.  As you can see we chose the ‘images’ tab and Newshosting presented our results in thumbnail view.  Depending on your search criteria you could easily have hundreds if not thousands of image previews.

Here are a few tips and tricks for the Newshosting client:

  • Enable SSL – by default the Newhosting client is set to standard connection on port 119.  For privacy purposes and perhaps to avoid throttling by some ISP’s we suggest you switch over to SSL..  To do so click on Options – Settings.  Then go to the connection tab.  Click the ‘Prefer SSL connections if available’ checkbox and choose port 443.  This isn’t a must but we prefer our privacy both on the Internet via a Personal VPN service and on Usenet via SSL.
  • Delete Private Data – again go to Options – Settings.  Then the General tab.  This is purely a personal preference.  We like to delete private data on application exit.  You can choose whether or not to delete search history, favorites, download history and bookmarks.
  • Auto Shutdown – when downloading you can queue up several selections and click the ‘auto shutdown’ button at the top of the screen and walk away.
  • Right click – we noticed that using the right mouse button opens up lots of options in the reader.  So wherever you happen to be right click and see what options are available.  This presents some nice shortcuts and additional benefits of the client.
